I’m Mat, and I am a good strategist.

I work with good people who want to do great work for organisations committed to doing good in the world.

Good strategy moves people.

It isn’t seen, it’s felt.

It works beneath the surface, bringing clarity to complexity, engaging empathetically, and creating the conditions for people to embrace change—in ways that feel true to them.

By uncovering why people behave the way they do and decoding their decision-making, I craft clear, compelling strategies that move people to think, feel, and behave differently.

My strength lies in my interdisciplinary approach, blending behavioural science, psychology, and social and cultural insight with a background in advertising and communications.

  • “What I’ve really appreciated in working with Mat is how he prioritised deep engagement with subject matter experts to develop very nuanced understanding of violent extremism and potential pitfalls...it’s been incredible to see that come through in the work.”

Debra Smith, Research Fellow, Victoria University

  • “I’ve known Mat and his team for many years and appreciate the rigour and approach they take in addressing some of the issues that relate to masculine identities. Our team are thrilled to be working with them”

Hunter Johnson, former CEO, The Man Cave

  • "In my years working with Mat, I've repeatedly seen how he brings clarity and provides direction to very complex challenges. His ability to do so is grounded in his blend of empathy, behavioural insight and psychological expertise"

A selection of my recent work.

  • Client: North West Melbourne PHN

Discrimination and stigma from healthcare workers can be a significant barrier to care for people experiencing issues with alcohol and other drugs (AOD). Working alongside PHN’s expert working group, we developed a Behavioural Framework incorporating audience segmentation, prioritised interventions, and a tailored communications strategy. This provided a structured approach to reducing discrimination and improving care experiences within the primary healthcare sector.

  • Client: NSW Cancer Institute

Through in-depth research analysis, participatory research, and stakeholder consultation, we developed a Behavioural Strategy and Framework to guide the creation of a vaping cessation app. By incorporating adolescent psychology and identity formation, we ensured the app’s interventions were engaging, evidence-based, and user-centred, empowering young people to quit in ways that resonate with their experiences and motivations.

  • Client: Medibank Group

To improve outcomes for patients receiving rehabilitation in the home (RITH) and hospital in the home (HITH) services, we conducted in-depth qualitative behavioural research and stakeholder engagement. The project delivered insights, journey maps, and marketing recommendations, helping Medibank’s in-home care team tailor their services to better meet patient needs and improve engagement with care programs.

  • Client: Federal Government

Led a multi-year strategic communications program to reach disenfranchised and disconnected young men. Through collaboration with community groups, expert partners, specialists, and government stakeholders, we developed culturally appropriate, targeted communications that helped to equip young men to reject extremist influences in online environments.

  • Client: Federal Government

Through Stakeholder Engagement and the engagement of an expert advisory group we developed a Behavioural framework to that underpinned the creation of resources for primary healthcare workers to help them identify signs of coercive control and respond effectively.

  • Client: KMD Holding Group

To unify iconic outdoor brands—Kathmandu, Rip Curl, and Oboz—under a consolidated corporate brand, we developed a brand strategy framework that aligned a shared purpose with each brand’s unique strengths. Through in-depth stakeholder engagement and workshops, we established an overarching positioning that reinforced sustainability commitments while preserving the distinct equity of each brand.

  • Client: Epworth Hospital

Trust is critical in healthcare, and Epworth Hospital needed a refined brand identity and communication strategy to strengthen relationships with patients, healthcare professionals, and the broader community. By embedding behavioural insights into its brand framework, we helped Epworth develop clearer positioning, patient-centered messaging, and more effective engagement strategies, reinforcing trust and credibility at every touchpoint.
